“Don’t try to shake it just nod your head. Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On.” – Jimmy Buffett

It’s one of the most simply stated yet most valuable pieces of advice you could ever get from anyone: Don’t worry about what you can’t control.

You probably hear someone say it from time to time, but you also probably take this advice to mean the extreme opposite of worrying and think of it as “just forget about it”. This is actually just as bad. Of course no one is going to recommend that you worry your life away, but I doubt they’ll advise you to suppress your memories of it either.

What this advice really means is to acknowledge and accept those things you can’t control. Be mindful of them so you can make good decisions, but nothing more. At the same time, don’t spend your time trying to change things that you can’t change or control things you can’t control. You’re just setting yourself up for misery and failure every time if you do.

Focus on the things that are within your control. Set yourself up for success and happiness. The things you can’t control will take care of themselves naturally and you’ll be able to deal with them better.

This is all easier said than done, but it is an important skill to master as it is key to the simple island lifestyle mentality. On an island, you don’t worry about a thing. You feel fine to let nature take it’s course. Storms come and go… and you are good with that. You may actually enjoy and embrace them.

Or when you surf, you wait for that perfect wave. You WAIT. Because you can’t do anything else. It’s beyond your control. And then when the wave is over, the ride is most rewarding. All because you went with the flow.

Don’t worry about what you can’t control… leave that to the Tiki gods.

It’s all about mentality and it’s the first major step to achieving a simple island lifestyle.
